Words and Thoughts Can Hurt You

Remember that children’s rhyme: Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me? I have found that the last part of that rhyme, ‘words will never hurt me’ is false. There are times when I can still hear negative and nasty words that were said to and about me in my past. If I allow those negative words and thoughts continue playing in my head, my whole demeanor, my day, even my life could change according to those words. Anything said about me or done to me that does not line up with God’s Word has no place in my life nor in my mind. And I should, without hesitation get rid of them immediately, and replace them with the Word. 2 Corinthians 10:5 says: 5We tear down arguments, and every presumption set up against the knowledge of God; and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ... This is why it is so important to study, know and understand the Word for yourself, so when you have different situations in your life you are already prepared with the Word, the armor of God. For example, whenever I feel unworthy or If I forget who God created me to be, I have verses that I put together in a prayer, Psalm 139:13-14 & 17: I thank you Lord for creating me, I praise you Lord because I am fearfully and wonderfully made and your works are wonderful. Thank-you for your many thoughts of me, they are like the grains of sand.

Although I still have a long way to go, meditating and studying the word has helped me tremendously with my thought life. Meditating means spending time reading and thinking about what you have read. I admit I don’t do it as much as I should, but when I do, it’s like instant medicine to my soul. There are times after reading a passage, I feel refreshed, and it was just what I needed to get through my day, and there are times after reading a verse, I get a good look in the mirror of myself and the things I need to work on. Jeremiah 23:29 says: Is not my word like fire declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces. If the Word is like fire and a hammer what do you think it will do to your thoughts, or your situations when you read and say the Word over your life? From now on, don’t make light of the words you use or the words that are spoken over you.

Spend some time in the word, find a scripture for every situation you are facing, so that you are prepared to break those words, thoughts and situations into pieces that do not line up with the Word.

Blessings & Favor,

ree
